This year the Christian Brothers Band had probably the most Popular Pep Band in ten years. The boys really put forth a lot of effort and Senior, Brennan Powers arranged some new songs for the group. They even dressed up for Halloween, although the game rained out. At the Fall concert the group played the premier performance of "Stax-O-Wax," a stax record medley by Patrick Bolton.
In the spring the group played at a few Basketball Games and on Jan. 15 the Center College Band came down and perormed a concert for the student body. Guys participated in All West, Ut Martin Honor Band, the Mid-South Honor Band, the University of Memphis Honor Band, and Solo and Ensemble festival. On February 12th, the group went to Stax and recorded "Stax-O-Wax" to be released on Vinyl Record. The band also get to meet students from the Stax Academy, toured the Stax Museum, and Smoochie Smith (original Mar Key's piano player) played piano with the group and is on the recording.
The Band also played two concerts this spring. The first was the John Sandridge Memorial Concert on March 5th to coincide with the inaugural year of the Christian Brothers Junior High Honor Band and the second was the Spring Concert entitled Sounds of Sorcery. At this concert the band performed a number of spookey pieces including "VooDoo" that included many lighting and stage effects.
At the Band Banquet, the band inducted George Pokorski in to the Hall of Fame. He served as the first conductor of the Junior High Honor Band this year.
The 2009 Historic Band was a very active one indeed. The Band started the year off with a performance at the Newly Remodled Overton Park Shell on Sept. 26, followed by an appearance at the Pink Palace Crafts Fair on Oct. 2nd. The boys were then asked to perform for the Inauguration of Dr. Smarrelli, the new president of C.B.U. held at St. Peter's Church on Oct. 11. Mayor Myron Lowery and Congressman Steve Cohen were both in attendance. 2009 also marked the 100th anniversary of the Shelby County Courthouse. The celebration was on Oct. 13 and the group perfomred for many dignatarys including Mayor A.C. Warton. The group also performed for the Elmwood Cemetery Twilight Costume Tour, the Veterans Day Parade, and the annual Massing of the Colors. They represented the school well.
