Year in Review

The band of 2005 was an active one with performances throughout the year. In the fall the Pep Band entertained audiences at Football and Basketball games and the Concert Band held it’s annual Fall Concert on Dec. 12. Some impressive highlights included the Toccata for Band by Frank Erickson, and Summon the Heroes by John Williams. Michael Smith and Brian Nickol were featured on Minuet Petite on Oboe, and Michael Munekata was soloist on The Magic Trumpet.

The Historic Band was also very active this fall with the annual Veterans Day Parade and Massing of the Colors. They performed at the St. Cecilia Sing concert at St. Peter’s Church on Nov. 21 and their year was capped off with a parade through the Magic Kingdom in Disneyworld. At Disneyworld, the band was treated to three days in the parks.

The Jazz Band this year performed for Mayor Willie W. Herenton at his Recognition of Employee Service Ceremony and traveled to New Orleans to perform at festival at Loyola New Orleans along with visiting our brother school LaSalle High School. The band also attended a performance by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

In the Spring the Concert Band held two concerts, the first being the John Sandridge Memorial Concert on March 2nd and the Annual Spring Concert on May 1st. At the John Sandridge concert the band performed the Florentiner March by Julius Fucik and the Overture to Die Meistersinger by Wagner; these two works were also performed at Concert Festival where the band received Superior Ratings. The Spring Concert was entitled “Echoes of the Cosmos” and included music from Star Wars, Metroid, and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The year concluded with the band’s performance at Graduation.
